I was really disappointed to see that you would have a prize furnished by the Nestle Corporation. Your website seems very breastfeeding and eco friendly, so I am wondering why you would allow a company so widely known for racist/anti-breastfeeding/un-eco friendly practices to get free advertising on your site. Perhaps this slipped by or maybe the prize was just too good to pass up. I urge you from mother-to-mother to reconsider using Nestle promotions or advertisements on your website.

Nestle promotes artificial infant feeding around the world, breaking a World Health Organization (WHO) code of marketing. Nestle makes a profit while others count the cost.

WHO and the United Nations Children's Fund say that reversing the decline in breastfeeding could SAVE 1.5 MILLION LIVES EVERY YEAR. Millions more infants become seriously ill because they are not breastfed.
Where supplies of water are unsafe and conditions unsterile, a bottle-fed baby is up to 25 times more likely to die as a result of diarrhea. Expensive formula (often costing more than half the entire family income) impoverishes people who are already poor. Milk is often watered down to make it go further, thus adding the extra risk of malnutrition.
A breastfed child is less likely to suffer from gastroenteritis, respiratory and ear infections, diabetes, pneumonia, polio, allergies and other illnesses. Bottle baby disease is the name given to the deadly combination of diarrhea, dehydration and malnutrition, which is the result of unsafe bottle-feeding.
Breastfeeding is the best start in life for a child - but Nestlé's baby food marketing puts profits before health.
Baby Milk Action coordinates the 18 country international Nestle boycott, focusing on Nestle because it controls about 40% of the world market in baby milks and uses its influence to undermine controls on marketing activities. Monitoring shows Nestle to be the largest single source of violations worldwide. The Boycott is supported in the UK by over 100 church, health and consumer groups, over 90 businesses 80 student unions, 17 local authorities, 12 trade unions, 74 politicians and political parties and many celebrities.
Nestle has been warned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) not to repeat claims made in the 1996 anti-boycott advertisement.

Nestle takes notice of sales figures - by boycotting Nestle, you can help stop these unnecessary deaths.

What you can do

Don't buy any Nestle products. If the company you work for provides Nestle products in Vending machines or in the staff canteen, make sure whoever is responsible is aware - see further down this message for a list of Nestle brands, print it out and take it shopping with you.

UNICEF reviews contaminants:
The possibility of breastmilk contamination has recently been portrayed in alarmist headlines by the media. A UNICEF paper 'Breastfeeding and Environmental Contamination' reviews the evidence. The superiority of breastmilk, despite the presence of small quantities of chemicals is affirmed. One study cited estimates that 'about three days of life expectancy would be lost because of cancer attributable to contaminant exposure through breastmilk. In contrast the decrease life expectancy from not breastfeeding was about 70 days'
Exclusive breastfeeding recommended for 'around 6 months': This is one of the conclusions of a WHO. report reviewing existing scientific knowledge about complimentary feeding in developing countries. The report states that 'full-term infants with appropriate weight for gestational age should be exclusively breastfed until about 6 months of age' and that 'children should continue to be breastfed for up to 2 years of age or beyond'
The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk substitutes was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 1981. It aims to protect all mothers and babies from aggressive company practices and to ensure that they receive accurate information. It bans all promotion of baby milks and other breastmilk substitutes.

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday the 14th, at 10 am WILL NOT be the May La Leche League Toddler Meeting. That meeting will be NEXT WEEK – the third Wednesday – on May 21 at 10 am.

This Thursday at 10 am WILL NOT be the Oak Hill LLL Meeting. That meeting was last week since that was the 2nd Thursday of May.

This Thursday, Thursday the 15th, at 7 pm WILL be the May La Leche League West PM Meeting.

Both the West PM and the Toddler meetings are at Riverbend Church which is located on Loop 360 just south of the river. We meet in Quad 2 room A now - it's on the front side of the quad buildings, right across the walkway from the bathrooms.

It would be wonderful if you came to either (or both) of the meetings to share your experiences with the other moms. I hope that we see you there!

Additionally, there is another LLL meeting in southwest Austin this week. The South II Group meets this Friday at 10:15 am in the conference room at the Will Hampton Library. The library is located on Convict Hill Road between Beckett and Brush Country.

Dear Mamas,

Just a couple of months ago, a mother was kicked out of a museum in New York for breastfeeding, a perfectly legal act in that state. [1] Mothers continue to suffer discrimination and humiliation for breastfeeding, even though doctors recommend breastfeeding for all infants. Clearly we need Congress to pass the Breastfeeding Promotion Act (H.R. 3799) now--before more mothers are stigmatized and humiliated for breastfeeding.

But this Act is currently stalled in Congress, and isn't going to move forward without increased citizen pressure. You can supply that pressure.

THE LOWDOWN ON THE BREASTFEEDING PROMOTION ACT: Representative Carolyn Maloney's Breastfeeding Promotion Act (H.R. 3799) would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to protect breastfeeding by new mothers by providing tax credits to employers who provide a place to breastfeed and/or provide breast pumps. This makes it a lot easier for women who want to give their babies breastmilk and keep their jobs. As you may know, 82% of American women become mothers by the time they are forty-four years old, so this issue is critically important to a large portion of our nation. La leche league Meetings

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday the 19th, at 10 am will be the March La Leche League Toddler Meeting. The next night, Thursday the 20th (my mom's birthday), at 7 pm will be the March La Leche League West PM Meeting.

The Toddler Meeting is perfect for those of you who feel that you have 'outgrown' regular LLL meetings but you would still like some support in dealing with the challenges of nursing a child over the age of 1 year. Your baby doesn't need to be a toddler yet for you to attend the Toddler Meeting - if this a convenient time and place for you to attend a LLL meeting then feel free to show up. Feel free to bring your toddler, some snacks and maybe a toy or two.

The PM Meeting is perfect for those of you that are trying to balance working and nursing. These meetings are also great for pregnant moms that are still working and unable to attend a daytime meeting. You don't have to be a working mom to come to the PM meeting, all nursing moms are welcome regardless of their employment status. Plan on you and your baby spending a relaxing evening with other moms who share your concerns, problems and joys.

Terra Toys is in north Austin on Anderson Ln.

An awesome toy store that closely monitors its inventory lots of american made toys as well as the coveted line of Brio toys. This is the rockin bathroom. It has alot of local soft goods (clothing and blankets) and a terrific book section with a reading table; there are also lots of fun demos around the store.

dog almighty is on South Lamar.

They are very kid friendly and have all sorts of hot dogs, hand battered corndogs, and hand cut fries, DELISH!!! They include veggie dogs and they have a very cool menu with alot of locally inspired recpies. You can even get red velvet cup cakes. YuM!!! the decor includes local events posters and hand colored by your kids posters - it is an awesome spot I would bf there if Merle wasn't so interested in the fries!

Little Stacy Park

Little Stacy Park is located in Travis Heights in the heart of south Austin on Sunset Ln. and Eastside Dr.

It's just that the little part of Stacy Park is probably one of the most beautiful parks in Austin (of course not including Town Lake /Zilker). It has an awesome wading pool for the little kids and a big pool for the bigger ones that are seperate. They are both spring fed and the playground is awesome; it is situated under some very old live oaks that are just phenomnal to look under, they are quite amazing trees and create great shade for the park. Extremely bf-friendly (all of south Austin is), this is quite a jewl of a park and definately a well kept secret.

I love Austin area parks ! There are so many and I just seem to find a cool new park every week. This past weekend the family (the 3 of us) took an impromptu picnic to Dittmar recreation center, down in south Austin. I love their playground it has this beautiful, huge live oak towering over the whole playground. The trunk is terrific for climbing. There is even a picnic table under it, opposite the playground. We however ventured down the hill, beside the playing fields there are also great picnic areas with grills and everything. We had tuna salad so no need for the grill. It was a perfect lunch and Burger even topped off lunch with a little ninny. Another beautiful sunday in Austin Texas .

What's B.O.O.B. all about?

B.O.O.B. is committed to supporting breastfeeding mothers everywhere. B.O.O.B. is an online community conversation, both practical and philosophical, about how our society does and does not support breastfeeding. Who started B.O.O.B.?

B.O.O.B. is an interactive, site-specific, utilitarian, and philosophical artwork begun by Belle South founder Chasity Gordon and new media artist Jessica Gomula. The project explores the question of where in Austin would visiting breastfeeding mothers be welcome to nurse during the South By South West Interactive conference. They believe the easy to use, and easy to integrate Google-map will be a welcome resource for the mothers attending SXSW, and more importantly, as a long term resource for all new mothers living in the Austin area.
